Cataract Surgery: Basic vs. Laser

Laser Surgery Benefits and How it Works

During cataract surgery, the LenSx femtosecond laser provides accurate automation that assists the surgeon in several ways, including:

Laser Created Incisions

Your cataract surgeon must make tiny self-sealing incisions in your eye in order to remove your foggy lens and replace it with an intraocular lens. Basic cataract surgery uses a blade for all incisions. With laser-assisted cataract surgery, each incision is customized and completed with a computer-guided femtosecond laser. A 3D image of your eye will allow your surgeon to adjust the size and location of your incisions during surgery.

Automated Capsulotomy

Known as the capsular bag, the natural lens of our eyes resides within a thin, transparent capsule. Before removing the cloudy lens, your surgeon will need to create a circular perforation in the anterior (front) capsule. In basic cataract surgery, a needle-like device is used to create the opening, then forceps are used to remove it. When using the laser, this circular opening is created in seconds. Compared to basic surgical methods, laser capsulotomies have higher accuracy and reproducibility.

Fast and Easy Cataract Removal with Lens Fragmentation

Using the laser to break up and segment the cataract lens will reduce the amount of ultrasonic energy and time required to remove it. As a result, less inflammation occurs within the eye, and the visual recovery process is accelerated. Most of our patients will notice an improvement in their vision as early as the next day.

Correcting Astigmatism

The LenSx laser may be used during cataract surgery to perform LRIs (Limbal Relaxing Incisions). Patients with low to mild astigmatism can greatly benefit from LRIs since they reduce or eliminate their astigmatism. Further, they can be used for fine-tuning a toric lens treatment if the patient has severe astigmatism. Your physician will use a 3D custom mapping to determine if an LRI is necessary.

In Summary:

Both laser-assisted cataract surgery and basic cataract surgery are extremely safe procedures. The benefits of laser-assisted cataract surgery include increased precision, greater predictability, and improved customization. Delray Eye Associates expert surgeons have experience with both techniques and will explain their recommendations during your cataract evaluation. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an evaluation for this life-changing procedure, please call our office at (561) 498-8100.
