LASIK Surgery

For patients who want to see clearly and become more independent of the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses, we offer the latest refractive surgery techniques, including laser vision correction with LASIK and PRK. Following surgery, many patients are able to rid themselves of glasses and contact lenses.

Delray Eye Associates, P.A. is proud to have Dr. Steven Rosenfeld providing LASIK surgery for our patients.

With LASIK, you’ll save in the long term by cutting out the regular purchase of glasses, contact lenses, or contact lens solution.  Use our LASIK savings calculator and see how those little expenses can add up over time.

What Is LASIK?

LASIK is a sophisticated procedure which involves the use of a laser to reshape the cornea, the outermost part of the eye responsible for much of the focusing power. This allows correction of refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism by focusing light entering the eye onto the retina.

Is It Right for You?

The best candidates for LASIK are patients who are at least 21 years old, in good general health and free of eye conditions such as glaucoma, corneal or retinal disease, dry eye or cataracts. Prospective LASIK patients should also have a realistic understanding of what can be achieved and be willing to accept the risks of surgery. Finally, patients must have corneas of a sufficient thickness to allow for the creation of a corneal flap, a necessary part of the surgery process. Some patients whose corneas are too thin may be offered an alternative laser eye surgery procedure such as PRK, which does not involve the creation of a corneal flap.

To determine your candidacy, Dr. Rosenfeld will meet with you for a one-on-one consultation and perform a thorough eye exam. If you are considering LASIK, please call us today at (561) 498-8100 or (561) 734-0267.

About LASIK and iLASIK

The LASIK procedure involves three essential steps: preoperative evaluation, the creation of a flap, and the laser ablation, or sculpting.

The first step is the diagnosis of the eye’s refractive errors and flaws and evaluation of the cornea and health of the eye. The cornea is the clear structure at the front of the eye that helps focus light. LASIK involves a careful resculpting of the cornea to optimize the focus of light. Therefore, careful evaluation of the corneal shape is essential. Advanced digital technology known as “wavefront” imaging scans the eye and provides a customized map of the corneal surface. This diagnostic information is used by the surgeon to calibrate the excimer laser for accurate vision correction. Other eye diseases that may affect the results of the procedure must be ruled out as well with a complete eye exam.

Delray Eye Associates’ surgical team uses iLASIK, or bladeless LASIK, using a laser known as an IntraLase femtosecond laser. Using the IntraLase laser ensures greater reliability and accuracy, and reduces the risk of complications. In fact, the U.S. Navy will only allow LASIK to be performed on its fighter pilots if the surgeon uses the iLASIK technique, which consists of the IntraLase femtosecond laser and the VISX Star S4 excimer laser.

The flap is then lifted aside, and a laser known as the excimer laser is used to reshape the exposed cornea by removing a precise section of tissue, a process known as “ablation.” Dr. Rosenfeld uses the VISX Star S4 IR Excimer Laser System, the most advanced excimer laser currently on the market. Once reshaping of the cornea is complete, the flap is then returned to its original location, where it serves as a natural bandage during the healing process. No stitches are used in this surgery. The entire procedure takes less than five minutes and is generally painless.

After Surgery

Following the LASIK procedure, many patients notice nearly immediate vision-correction results, while others experience more gradual improvement. Most patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after the procedure and are thrilled to enjoy life without the annoyance of glasses or contacts.
