iDose TR: A New Option for Managing Glaucoma

Remembering glaucoma eye drops can become a daily challenge. Busy schedules, difficulty squeezing bottles, and uncertainty about whether a drop reached the eye can make treatment frustrating. At our office in Delray Beach, we now offer iDose TR for appropriate patients from Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, and surrounding communities who need help managing their eye pressure.

Our glaucoma specialist, Dr. Daniel Jewelewicz, is offering this treatment as another option for personalized glaucoma care.

What Is iDose TR?

iDose TR is a tiny implant that continuously releases travoprost, a medication that helps lower pressure inside the eye. It is FDA approved for adults with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, which means elevated eye pressure.

Unlike prescription drops applied to the eye’s surface, iDose TR delivers medication directly inside the eye. The implant is placed through a small incision during an outpatient procedure.

This sustained delivery approach may reduce the need for daily pressure lowering drops. However, some patients still require additional medication or other treatments to reach their target pressure.

Why Lowering Eye Pressure Matters

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain. The condition often develops without noticeable symptoms, making regular monitoring important even when your vision seems unchanged.

Lowering eye pressure helps reduce the risk of further glaucoma damage. Treatment cannot restore vision already lost, but it can help protect remaining sight.

With ocular hypertension, pressure is elevated without established glaucoma damage. Your doctor considers your individual risk factors when deciding whether treatment is needed.

How Can iDose TR Help?

One potential benefit is less dependence on remembering and administering daily drops. Continuous medication delivery can simplify treatment for people who struggle with their routine or have difficulty handling bottles.

It may also be worth discussing if your current drops cause irritation or are difficult to tolerate. Your doctor will consider whether an implant offers an appropriate alternative.

The goal is reliable pressure management with a treatment plan that fits your needs. Results and treatment duration vary, so follow up remains essential.

What Should Patients Expect?

Before recommending iDose TR, Dr. Jewelewicz will examine your eyes, review your treatment history, and discuss your pressure goals. Your eye anatomy, corneal health, and previous procedures help determine whether you are a candidate.

After placement, you will receive instructions about recovery, medications, and follow up visits. These appointments allow your doctor to check pressure, assess healing, and monitor the implant.

Do not stop prescribed glaucoma drops unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Is iDose TR Right for Everyone?

iDose TR is not suitable for every patient. Certain corneal conditions, previous corneal transplantation, eye infections, or allergies to its ingredients may rule it out.

Possible risks include inflammation, increased eye pressure, discomfort, redness, and changes in vision. Your doctor will explain the benefits and risks alongside alternatives, including drops, laser treatment, and glaucoma surgery.

If your current routine is difficult to maintain, an evaluation can help identify your options.
